Delta calls all their old parts "Historic Parts",and charges a lot for them. The problem with them is they are usually missing guide parts. I would be missing the external clutch, but I'm not sure if that is really needed, or if it is just a way to slide the larger pulley for direct drive out of the way.If yours has the typical hexagonal steel guide elevating rod, like mine does,it's pretty much the same as the other old Deltas. And the parts manual does show what looks like it would be an external clutch (parts 144) and and internal clutch (Part 146). No shaft that pulls out, no lever to turn. The question remains, there is no obvious external way to shift from back gear to direct. I do have the right serial number to fit in that catagory (it covers up to BU-8780, and I have BU-8572). The lower figure of the parts manual does seem to be the one that applies. I'm just up the road from you, in Arnold. Sounds like the previous owner didn't understand the operation. I don't remember the exact means of engaging/disengaging, but I do recall that on some of the 'unrestored' old saws I've looked at, this clutch can be difficult to shift, probably due to old/dried oil. The newer version of this saw has a clutch in the hub of the wheel drive shaft (part 144). See the lower figure on page 3 of the parts list. MFisher, Parts list and operating manual here. Didn't get the speed high enough, so they bought another saw. Privious owner was using it for wood, and had a large pulley on the motor driving a small pulley on the backgear trying to get the speed high enough for wood. I have not found a version of the saw that has 'automatic' gear changing, but maybe I have just missed it.Īm I missing something? I don't want to tear anything up, but other than the original step pulleys missing, it looks to be complete. If you turn the direct drive shaft the wrong way, it won't turn because of the backgears. Delta Milwaukee Bandsaw Serial Number 40-3519 If you turn the direct shaft, the backgear shaft becomes idle. It seems that if you turn the backgear shaft it drives as would be expected. This model does not appear to have a knob to pull out or a lever to turn to shift from backgear to direct drive. Other than that, it was a real nice rebuild. Privious owner did a total rebuild, including painting over all tags. Just picked up a Rockwell/Delta 14' bandsaw. This isn't quite an antique, but thought I would try here first. The serial number shows the saw was built in late 1949. Delta Milwaukee Bandsaw Serial Number 40-3519ġ949 Delta/Milwaukee 14' Band Saw.
